How to Choose International Travel Medical Insurance

เขียนโดย ohada |

If you are planning your trip to Canada or any other overseas location, then you are probably more occupied with planning your activities and hotels than thinking about your travel insurance. Chances are that you will not need to have international travel medical insurance, but if something does go wrong the small investment in your health can save you a lot of problems.

It is a no brainier to take out the insurance, but you might find it confusing knowing which company to go with. In order to choose insurance that is right for you, you will need to do some research. There are some existing policies that you may have that include travel insurance and some credit card companies also have this service.

When you have worked out the current level of coverage that you have, you will have to start looking at the different travel insurance options that are out there and start comparing what they have to offer. There are various types of travel insurance and most of them base the premiums either on the length of the trip or a fraction of the total price of the trip.

Basically there are four types of international travel medical insurance: short term or single trip coverage policies, long term or multiple stop trips of up to 12 months, expatriate covers people living overseas and foreign national covers people that are resident of the United States, but not citizens.

The complicated bit about choosing the right travel insurance for your Canadian vacation or other overseas journey is comparing what type of incidents are covered with the policy. There is a great degree of variability between what is covered with different policies as well as the amounts that you are covered for.

There may be some policies that charge more for some featured inclusions that are not relevant to you, so it may be possible to save money with a less comprehensive policy. Some of the elements that may be included in travel medical insurance are: emergency medical care, emergency dental care, medical removal from the country to the nearest appropriate facility, trip cancellation and delay, lost luggage that may pay out for lost items up to a set limit.

There do tend to be some exclusions with medical travel insurance that you may need to be aware of. The more common ones are - prior medical conditions, pregnancy, adventure sports such as diving and mountain climbing, self caused injury or mental illness.

Before you settle on the international travel medical insurance coverage that you are going to take out, there are a couple of factors which will affect which insurance policy is the right one for you. You need to consider - the length of your trip, your destination, participation in high-risk sports, your general health. Always check up on the fine details and be clear about what you have covered and how to go about making a claim. Travel insurance can make all the difference between a stress free holiday and a disastrous one.

Your Medical Insurance May Not Cover You When You Travel

เขียนโดย ohada |

If you open your passport to page two, you will see a warning that says that anyone who is considering foreign travel should find out what travel medical health insurance coverage, they will require while they are outside the United States. For any US citizen going abroad, Medicare does not cover the medical care costs outside the US and US territories, except in rare cases in Canada and Mexico.

In fact, it might surprise you to learn that many international travelers travel without appropriate and adequate insurance protection. US Government sponsored health insurance programs, like Medicare, are highly unlikely to cover any emergency medical care that you may have to receive in a foreign country.

Even employer sponsored plans usually have limited overseas coverage, for emergency care only, provided you can prove the emergency. Whether you are traveling on business or for pleasure, you probably have gaps in your travel medical coverage that you are not even aware of.

Always remember that adequate travel medical insurance is critical for any international travel. Getting good healthcare may be a tricky business in itself in some parts of the world.

Some hospitals, the world over do not provide treatment or allow a discharge until they receive a guarantee of payment. In most cases, such a guarantee can most easily be provided by your travel medical insurer.

So, if you don't have adequate cover, you may have to pay in thousands of dollars advance, with your credit card, provided the hospital accepts a foreign credit card, which many don't.

In addition, in that pinch situation, your card must also have a large enough credit limit to cover the estimated cost of medical care.

Also, getting sudden medical evacuation, to return to the US, where the healthcare is of a known level and your regular insurance is good enough, can be even trickier.

Local authorities usually have tie-ups with certain evacuation companies, which may not recognize either your credit card or your domestic insurance.

Most of the travel medical insurance plans, however, include medical assistance benefit giving you 24/7 access to a creditable evacuation company or will actually arrange for an evacuation through their own medical personnel.

If you have medical insurance cover in the US, assess the plan that you have. Check with your insurance provider and determine exactly what kind of coverage you have, under the existing policy.

If you feel that the provided cover is not enough, have your travel medical insurance cover increased before you ever leave home. If you don't already have insurance, you know how difficult things can sometimes get. Think about how much worse it can be in a foreign and unfamiliar country.

There are three major types of travel medical insurance coverage to be considered before you leave. Most reputed travel insurance products will offer either all three of these, or, at least two of them:

- Supplemental medical and accident insurance pays for the doctor and the hospital bills. May sometimes include dental care as well as medications. Does not cover preventive care, including annual physicals.

- Medical Evacuation plans take care of expensive evacuations which can cost as much as $50,000. In addition to the insurance cover, they should provide assistance in arranging the evacuation.

- Trip cancellation or interruption plans cover you financially in case you suddenly need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a medical reason. If you can't take the vacation because of a personal or family illness, the insurance will reimburse you for the non-refundable parts of the trip.

Find and purchase a comprehensive, secure and worldwide travel medical insurance plan. Don't leave home without it.

Finding Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

เขียนโดย ohada |

What would happen if you had a month's trip to America booked - departing in six months time - and were unexpectedly diagnosed with lung cancer? Suppose you had to cancel your holiday and go in for immediate surgery. If you had been smart and taken out travel insurance - effective from the date you booked the trip - you should be able to recover costs associated with the cancellation of the trip (after any excess payable). However, if you had waited until the day before departure to purchase travel insurance your cancellation costs would not be covered. Some people try to squeeze extra mileage out of their annual travel insurance policy by making the start date of the policy the date of the first departure. This is a risky thing to do because there will be no cover for cancellation costs if anything should go wrong prior to the departure date.

Just suppose you'd been having tests and investigations within the last year for lung-related problems but failed to declare this fact when purchasing travel insurance. During your scuba diving holiday in California, you start coughing up blood all over the dive boat. You have to seek emergency medical care and a diagnosis of lung cancer is confirmed. Would you be covered for the high emergency medical costs or curtailment of your trip? Probably not.

Anyone with a serious pre-existing medical condition will already know that obtaining travel insurance can be tricky, but not impossible. Some travel insurance companies exclude all claims related to pre-existing medical conditions. Some insurers will cover for pre-existing conditions without any additional premium. Other travel insurance companies may have a medical screening system, usually carried out over the telephone or online. A series of questions is asked to assess the risk and determine whether insurance can be issued. If approved, there may be a choice to either pay an additional premium to cover the pre-existing condition - or elect not to pay the extra premium and exclude claims relating to the risk.

Common conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes and asthma can all cause problems when trying to obtain travel insurance - especially if combined with other conditions, so never neglect to disclose something as common as high cholesterol thinking that it is insignificant! All questions must be answered fully and honestly.

As with any type of insurance, there are always exclusions. Some insurers will refuse to insure those with pre-existing conditions involving cancer, serious kidney problems (requiring dialysis), serious heart conditions, strokes and HIV, AIDS, or any AIDS-related problems. They also do not cover for suicide or suicide attempts - in case you're thinking of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge!

Most travel insurance policies will carry similar wording and it is wise to read and understand the terms and conditions. For instance, there might be clauses stating that you should never travel against the advice of a medical practitioner, or to obtain medical treatment abroad (unless already disclosed and pre-approved). The same goes for those on waiting lists for surgery or procedures, or awaiting the results of medical tests. There are specialist travel insurers who will often cover terminal illnesses.

During the medical screening, you may be asked specific questions, such as: have you been a hospital inpatient or had any medical condition that requires ongoing medication, or referral to a specialist within the past twelve months? Have you ever suffered from, been diagnosed with, or treated for cancer (or other malignant disease), a heart or lung condition (excluding well-controlled asthma), high blood pressure or any psychiatric disorder?

Any claims you make which relate directly or indirectly to the types of conditions listed above will normally be excluded - unless you declared the condition and it was accepted by the underwriter, subject to any conditions or additional premiums imposed. Whether or not a particular travel insurance company is willing to offer insurance will depend upon different factors, depending on the underwriter, so it is wise to shop around and obtain quotes.

The biggest mistake is taking the risk of failing to disclose a condition to obtain the insurance. You might get away with it if there are no problems and you have no reason to make a claim. However, if the worst should happen, the insurance company has ways to find out - and they will find out - about any pre-existing conditions! You could find yourself with huge medical bills and your insurance claims denied. With the high cost of medical treatment in some countries (the USA especially) it simply is not worth it. Always be completely honest so that you can have peace of mind and enjoy your holiday without worrying about every twinge!

Travel Insurance To Cover Medical Needs

เขียนโดย ohada |

Even though there are many reasons to purchase travel insurance, many people do not feel they need it when traveling in their country or origin or when traveling overseas. But if an emergency does occur, your medical insurance may not cover all of your expenses. This means you will have to pay the remainder, which could be thousands of dollars. If you can afford to make these types of payments, then you may not need additional insurance, but if you are on a fixed budget, you may need to purchase insurance for business and vacation travel.

Travel insurance can be purchased through companies that specialize in providing travelers with the insurance they need. Before signing a policy, read over it carefully and research the company to make sure they have a good reputation. If the coverage is not enough, you may be able to upgrade to another plan. You can opt for long term or short term insurance plans that allow you to be covered for a certain amount of time. For those who travel abroad often, long term plans may be more cost effective.

After finding a plan that meets your needs, make sure you pack all contact information and have it readily available in case of an emergency. Even if you need to cancel your trip or postpone it, you can use the insurance to avoid paying additional fees. When planning an expensive cruise or vacation, having this insurance will allow you to retrieve your deposit and help you cover any other costs.

Investing in travel insurance is a smart idea if you plan on staying in another country for an extended period of time. Students studying abroad, those traveling for business, or those who have family in another country, can purchase annual insurance policies that cover them for a longer period of time. In case of an emergency, they can provide proof of health coverage and be treated quickly.

Only 15% of Canadian Bank Credit Cards Include Travel Medical Insurance

เขียนโดย ohada |

Survey - Only 15% of Credit Cards Available At Major Canadian Banks Include Emergency Medical Travel Insurance

Many travelers believe that they are adequately protected by their credit card travel insurance coverage. The truth is, most credit cards provide very little coverage. Those companies that do provide coverage, tend to cover only non-medical emergencies such as common carrier accident, baggage insurance, or rental car collision insurance.

Highlights of Survey

Out of 26 credit cards only 4 offered emergency medical coverage standard.
None of the emergency medical insurance plans cover seniors age 65 or older.
None of the loyalty credit cards collected for free flights offer emergency medical, trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance standard.

A Note on Common Carrier Accident Insurance - The literature we read from the credit cards promoted this coverage as a major benefit. We believe that this is the reason many Canadians mistakenly believe that they have travel medical coverage from their credit card companies. Common carrier Accident insurance only covers your family if an accident occurs while you are on the common carrier (flight, cruise, train, bus, etc.) or while driving a rental car. Additionally, most credit card companies will cover you ONLY if you purchased the tickets (or booked your rental car) with the credit card that offers this coverage. We feel that those consumers should be very careful when relying on travel insurance coverage and need to read the policy in detail before departing on their trip.

Notes from researching credit card travel insurance coverage provided by the major banks credit cards;

TD Canada Trust - VISA

None of the TD Canada Trust Credit Cards offer any form of emergency medical travel insurance, baggage, or rental car collision, or trip cancellation coverage.

Common carrier travel accident insurance is available in various coverage amounts.

RBC Royal Bank - VISA

It is understandable the RBC has the best credit card travel insurance coverage of all of the big banks in Canada. RBC Insurance is a large travel insurance provider to the travel agencies. Therefore, they have better infrastructure to accommodate travel insurance plans as part of its credit card benefits.

That being said, only the preferred credit cards with high annual fees and interest rates offer the emergency medical, trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage standard.

RBC Royal Bank emergency medical travel insurance available on its preferred credit cards do not cover cardholders 65 and over.

CIBC - VISA

Similar to RBC, CIBC only offers emergency medical and trip interruption on its Gold VISA credit card. The big irony is that this is not CIBC's highly popular Aerogold® Visa card that avid travelers hold to take advantage of loyalty points that can be redeemed for free travel. In fact, the Aerogold® card only offers common carrier accident, baggage, and rental car collision coverage standard.

CIBC's emergency medical travel insurance available on its Gold credit cards do not cover cardholders 65 and over.

Bank of Montreal - MasterCard

Most disappointingly, Bank of Montreal offers absolutely no travel insurance coverage on any of its cards for free. All travel insurance coverage can be purchased in separate packages on an annual basis. Total comprehensive coverage will cost an additional $159 per year on top of any annual credit card fees. Lesser packages are available for lower costs.

ScotiaBank - VISA

Almost all of Scotiabank's Visa cards offer absolutely no travel insurance coverage at all. With the exception of the passport gold Visa card, you will need to purchase any additional coverage for your trip.

Scotiabank emergency medical travel insurance available on its passport credit cards does not cover cardholders 65 and over.

Conclusion

We have found in our survey that misleading advertisements made by some credit card companies leave some people to believe that they are fully covered in situations where accidents and tragedies occur on their trips. It is advisable for you to take time to read the terms and conditions of the insurance provided by your credit card company to elicit correct information about the coverage offered by your card issuer

International Travel Medical Insurance - What Makes a Good Plan

เขียนโดย ohada |

When you travel one of the important things to include is travel medical insurance. It needs to be on everyone's travel checklist. No one plans to be injured or sick while traveling or spending time in another country but it can happen. If you are in another country and are in need of medical attention, typically the doctors and hospitals want to be paid. They know that if they are not paid then, there is almost no chance they will be paid seriously. This means a traveler needs to take this seriously.

Travel medical insurance is not the same as trip insurance. The two are often confused. The plans may have similar and overlapping benefits but the purpose of these plans are not the same. Medical plans are to cover medical expenses with some trip and travel benefits. Trip insurance is to cover the trip cost in full or in part if a person cannot be on the trip. The reason for not being on the trip could be due to a car accident on the way. It could be due to a strike on a cruise ship. Trip insurance is to cover the loss of monies spent for the trip or cruise if certain covered events happen.

Travel agents typically offer trip insurance. Insurance agents that offer international medical insurance may also offer trip coverage plans as well. An insurance license is required to offer International travel health insurance. International health and medical insurance is a specialty in insurance industry. Few agents handle this. As with any specialty finding an agent that is knowledgeable and experienced with international insurance is very important as all plans are not the same. International travel health insurance plans are for traveling outside of a person's home country.

Travel medical insurance plans typically fall into two types. These are indemnity or a scheduled benefit plans which have specified dollar benefits for specified medical services. For example, a scheduled benefit program might pay $50 for a doctor and $1000 a day for hospital expenses. Scheduled benefits plans are used frequently by visitors to the US as this type costs less and with older age visitors, over age 70, actually covers more than more comprehensive plans. Comprehensive plans are the best choice if possible for visitors to the US are under age 70.

There are also plans that are like major medical health insurance plans. These plans offer a wider less restricted coverage. Both types of plan usually exclude pre-existing health conditions or have limitations on pre-existing health condition coverage. It is best to consult an agent that is experienced and handles international insurance plans daily so can give you good advice that fits your situation.

A good travel health and medical insurance plan would include the following policy benefits.

o Policy medical maximum - Plan choices may range from $50,000 to $1 million. The medical maximum available is usually limited to $50,000 or less for persons age 70 or over.

o Deductibles - these are typically per policy period and may be limited to 3 per family. Deductibles can be $0, $100, $250, $500, $1000 or $2500

o Coinsurance - is the amount an insured pays of eligible medical expenses before the insurance coverage pays benefits. Coinsurance might be 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% or 50% of the next $5000 to $10,000 of medical expenses after the deductible has been met. After that is met, the plan then would pay 100% of the eligible medical expenses up to the medical maximum selected.

o Plans include coverage for hospital room and board costs

o Plans include coverage for local ambulance costs

o Plans include coverage for intensive care unit costs

o Plans include coverage for outpatient treatment costs

o Plans include coverage for physical therapy costs

o Plans include coverage for other medical expenses as outlined in the plan. Have a look at these and what is excluded

o Hospital indemnity benefit - this an additional benefit that pays a certain dollar amount for days spent in a hospital.

o Coverage for a dental emergency - If the insured has an accident that injures their teeth or the person has a dental emergency due to pain, the plan has benefits. If this is due to an accident it is typically coverer to the policy limit as any other accident. If the emergency is due to pain then typically the benefit is $100.

o Coverage for complications of pregnancy - some, but not all, plans offer coverage for complications of pregnancy up to the 26th week

o Coverage for the acute onset of a pre-existing condition - an acute onset is a sudden and unexpected onset of a pre-existing condition. Some plans offer this benefit to US citizens under the age of 70. Most plans, but not all, do not offer coverage for pre-existing conditions to non US citizens.

o Emergency medical evacuation coverage - this benefit covers transport to the nearest medical facility qualified to handle your life threatening situation. This does not mean the person is going to be flown all the way back home to the US. There are ways to have that covered but it is a completely different thing. This benefit is often misinterpreted. Best to ask specifically.

o Emergency medical reunion coverage - a benefit to provide transport, lodging and meals for relative or other person to join the insured as well.

o Repatriation coverage - this is the return of mortal remains to a person's home in the event of death. This benefit is often misinterpreted. It applies in the event of a death. It is best if unclear to ask specifically as with emergency medical evacuation.

o Incidental home country coverage - this is the coverage for time you might spend in your home while traveling. For example, a person might travel abroad for six months. He or she might be back at home for a couple of weeks in the middle of the trip. Incidental home country coverage is what would cover those two weeks

o End of trip coverage - is the coverage that you can have after the end of your trip and you are back home. This varies considerably by plan and can be very important in how an accident or an illness while on the trip is covered when you return home

o The benefit period - is the time the plan will cover the insured person or people. In addition to the benefit period plans also should have end of trip coverage.

o Medical expenses from an act of terrorism - This is coverage if an injury is caused by a terrorist attack. Plans that do cover usually exclude events that are nuclear, chemical or biological.

o Accidental death and dismemberment coverage - this pays in the event a person is killed in an accident, loses a limb or loses vision.

o Natural disaster benefit - additional monies to help cover the costs of alternative accommodations in the event a person is caught in a natural disaster

o Hazardous sports rider coverage - many plans exclude sports and activities that they consider hazardous. Some plans have the option of covering these sports and activities. It is a good idea to check the exclusions and what the optional rider will cover.

o Additional travel coverage and assistance - may include trip interruption, lost luggage, lost documents, travel assistance, travel alerts, political evacuation, contact information for doctors, lawyers and replacement of prescriptions and a visa letter of proof of insurance for the countries that require this

o Plan renewability - Some insurance plans are not renewal or extendable once the plan is in force. Some insurance plans can be extended while on your trip. It is important to check this.

International travel health insurance is an important and valuable part of a safe and secure trip. It is best to become familiar with it is when you are calm and do not need it at that moment, maybe before you leave on your trip. Traveling can be disorienting. You might be on a long flight. You may be in a different time zone. You may be in a country where you don't speak the language. Hopefully you will not become sick or injured, but if you do it is important to have the best travel health insurance you can get.
