Research the high street travel shops and those on-line for both last minute deals and early booking special offers. Both can be good value for money.
A last minute deal may need you to be flexible regarding the exact destination, accommodation and time. You may have to be able to travel at quite short notice.
On the other hand booking a vacation early, perhaps for the next year, can also be good value. Early booking deals often give two weeks for the price of one or other incentives. Knowing that you have a vacation booked for as much as 12 months in advance will give you time to save enough money also.
Alternatively look at budget priced vacations such as staying in a caravan, on a campsite, or travelling by public transport. Now that you have an idea of the possible total cost of your vacation, start to work out a budget.
There are many ways to save such as:-
Look for part-time work on-line such as completing surveys or writing product reviews. Such activities can increase the amount of money that you have to play around with.
Economise on energy bills around the home. This will help the environment as well as saving you money. Make sure that thermostats are turned down a notch, you only use the economical cycles on dishwashers and washing machine, you avoid using the tumble drier at all costs, you wash the dishes by hand a few times a week instead of using the dishwasher, you only use such washing machines when you have a full load, lights are turned off in unoccupied rooms, you switch to energy saving light bulbs and no appliances are ever left in stand by mode. This list is not exhaustive and needs tailoring to fit your household. Make sure that all the household members are on board and you should save a heap of cash.
Cut back on treats such as take-aways, fast food, candy and dining out. We all want to be trim and in shape on our vacations and this may help.
Minimise the use of your vehicle or vehicles from home. Perhaps you could car share with a colleague or a family member. Walk occasionally rather than using the car and take public transport when you can.
Utilise money saving coupons, many of which can be found on-line. Remember though that, if you would not have bought the item normally, it may not really be a bargain.
Bulk buy items such as breakfast cereal, washing powder, toilet rolls, dog food, cleaning agents and the like. Make sure there are no expiry dates, which are near. If the goods are out of date before you can use them, they will be a waste of money.
Take packed lunches to work or make for the children to take to school.
Quit smoking. This will save you a huge amount of money and be good for your health.
Work out weekly meal plans in order to shop wisely and cheaply. Never compromise on healthy eating but make sensible choices.
Opt for store brand goods instead of more expensive named brands. Often these are all very much the same in reality, except store brands are cheaper.
Start a loose change jar at home and encourage the whole family to add to this jar.
If you are travelling abroad, buy some of the local currency throughout the year, as and when the exchange rates are good.
Avoid the Sales unless you need something. Sales encourage unnecessary spending.
If you need, or want, to buy travel insurance, shop around for the best deal. Make sure that you have the cover you may need though.
Make sure that you pay any deposits and balances on your vacation on or before the date due, to make sure that you do not have to pay any penalties.
The above are just a few of the many ways that you can budget in order to save money for a vacation. Set regular dates to bank any money that you have saved. Aim to save this money in a high interest savings account that has unlimited access.
